Pinoys in Qatar look for fallback jobs to survive crisis

Many Filipino overseas workers in Qatar are acquiring new skills to prepare themselves should the global economic crisis worsen in Qatar.

Domestic helper Fatima Usop decided to get a sideline to help the family. Usop is into direct-selling business of a clothing brand.

"Ako'y nagtitinda ng Natasha. Pumasok ako para magpa-member ng Natasha para makatulong sa asawa ko. Syempre, dapat tayong magtulungan,” Usop said.

The extra money the couple makes goes straight into the bank to save for their future child.

Housewife Loraine Cabunilas almost lost hope of ever finding a showroom for her direct-selling business. However, with the help of some friends, she was able to find a place to sell her Philippine-made products. Now, Pinoys frequent her store because of her very affordable products.

Meanwhile, Doha Pinoy Shooters Club president Richard Santos is preparing to start a business in the Philippines. That’s why he is so absorbed in studying photo editing.

Telecom engineer Ivan Lerios also took a part in the photo editing seminar which he said would add to his skills set.

“Itong training na ito, nakakapagdagdag ito sa mga skill set ko bilang isang engineer, at the same time hobbyist, isang photographer. Ngayon kung sakali man na mawawalan ako ng work dito at makabalik ako sa Pilipinas or kung saan mang bansa, magagamit ko itong skill,” Lerios said.
